When in Rome, Saint Peter’s Basilica is hard to miss. One of my most beautiful experiences was to climb the dome of this exceptional work of art at 7 AM. I felt very close to the creative genius of Michelangelo and others.

This photo was taken on the early morning of February 17, 2024. The first sunlight was touching the church and made it stand out as an invitation to keep faith in beauty. I was standing on the Pincio panorama terrace in Villa Borghese park and looking for a way to create a natural spotlight on the dome, so I used the balustrade to do that.

Personally I really like the small details of everyday life that are visible on the rooftops, giving the here and now a place in the same frame as this grand icon of the sacred world.

This photo was taken on Saturday February 3, 2024 in Rome, during a photowalk with my Roman photographer friends Gianluca and John Michael.

In the background you probably recognize the Colosseum. However, I was mainly focused on getting it all in the frame: the impressive Pine Trees, the great shadows created by the early morning sun, and the silhouettes of the man and the dove. The light was pretty tough, so I was hoping for the best when taking the shot.

The result is a photo that is dear to me (and to a few others, I know). Because of it’s warm atmosphere and composition, but most of all because I remember being there, feeling very much alive and enjoying photography with my friends in that beautiful city.

This photo, taken on November 13, 2024, shows a fragment of the impressive Fountain of the Frogs (La Fontana delle Rane) in the Coppedè quarter in Rome. The fountain became famous when, after their concert at the Piper Club in 1965, the Beatles ended up in the fountain.

I was fascinated by how the the water drops would look in black and white when I would manage to freeze them at high shutter speed. At the same time, I didn’t want the rather ironic face on the left to get most of the attention, so I made sure it was slightly out of focus.

This photo has become one of my personal favourites. The waterdrops look great, but more importantly it’s the memory I keep of this place so full of creative, joyful architecture.

To be honest, I really miss this place right now. It’s the Dutch North Sea Coast, somewhere between the villages of Wassenaar and Katwijk, and this photo was taken on April 10, 2024. I went there on a bike with Bob, one of my best friends. As sunset started he had to go back home to take care of his son. But I just had to stay, because I felt the light was going to be magical in the upcoming hour.

On moments like that, I try to follow my senses, enjoy the whole scene - not just the sea, but hey, look at that sky and foreground, imagine you touch the sand - and make the camera follow the feeling.

This photo is among my most popular photos, and I think that’s also because I didn’t want to go anywhere else when I stood there and you can feel that too!

This really is one of my lucky shots. On July 9, 2023 around 13 PM I was on my bike, enjoying the most beautiful, mysterious forest I know in the Netherlands (part of De Veluwe). After I took a break to drink some water, I wanted to take a single photo, just as a reminder of the day.

At that moment a young woman on a horse entered the scene from my back. There was no time to think about my camera settings, but I’m happy I took the shot anyway. The woman and the horse are just out of focus, on the move, bringing a pleasant dreaminess to the photo.

On November 19, 2024 I was working on my laptop in a bar very close to the Pantheon in Rome (on the right side of the photo you’ll notice a fragment of the iconic building). Around 2 PM I decided to go for a walk, but I had not realized that it would be very crowded on the Piazza della Rotonda, and I felt like running away.

But then I started to notice the way seagulls were flying above the people in certain patterns that only became visible after I had been gazing at the air for a while.

When I took this photo, it immediately felt like a movie shot to me. And for one or another reason it resonates with many people. I think the strength of a photo like this is not so much what you see, it’s what it reminds you of.
